41. Machinery Row~Mfg and Commercial Exhibits Era: 1908-1915 Publisher: Anonymous |
In Machinery Row, shown here on this postcard postmarked 1911, the buildings were owned by the manufacturers. This row of buildings was in “Block J”, just east of where Ye Old Mill is today. The buildings that can be identified by signs are D. M. Sechler Carriage Co. – Moline Illinois, Emerson Mfg. Co. – Rockford Illinois, Hayes Pump & Planter Co. – Galva Illinois, and Dodd & Struthers Lightning Rods – Des Moines. The Majestic Steel Range Co. of St. Louis had a huge mockup of their range. It was over twice as tall as the two men that can be seen standing in front. Galva Pump & Planter had a pair of Shetland ponies drawing a corn planter in operation, and a tank of ice water with miniature pumps supplying visitors with cold drinks. Other manufacturers had attractions of their own to pull in fairgoers |
